DOT physicals

El Paso Walk-In Clinic Offering DOT Physicals

If you are in the process of working with commercial vehicles and travel, a DOT physical will be necessary. DOT physicals are intended to assess your physical, mental, and emotional health to ensure you are in the proper state of operating these vehicles without putting you or others in danger. El Paso Family & Pediatric is proud to provide fast, reliable DOT physicals to clients in the El Paso area.

WHAT DOES A DOT PHYSICAL ENTAIL?

The DOT physical begins with discussing your medical history. Your examiner will also check your vitals, perform a vision test, check your hearing, check for deformities, assess your reflexes, listen for murmurs, perform a hernia check, and check other underlying conditions. We’ve outlined the tests we perform in DOT physicals below.

Vision
Commercial drivers are required to have at least 20/40 acuity in each eye with or without corrective lenses. Those with monovision may be disqualified from being granted a DOT medical card.

Hearing
When examining your ears, we will assess your ability to perceive and pick up a “forced whisper” from at least five feet away. We can examine your ability to do so, whether you use hearing aids or not.

Blood Pressure
We will check your blood pressure to indicate if there are any irregularities in your heartbeat and pulse.

Urinalysis
A urinalysis is required in order to successfully complete your DOT physical. This test requires a sample of your urine in order to detect a wide range of disorders such as kidney disease or diabetes.

Physical Examination
During the physical examination, we will quickly go over many aspects of your physical and mental health including the following:

Overall appearance

Mouth and throat

Lungs and chest

Abdomen and viscera

Limbs (any impairs)

Spine and musculoskeletal system

Neurological behaviors, patterns, reflexes
